A Fat Free Holiday Tradition

Filed under: Uncategorized — Carol @ 10:26 pm
In this month of November we celebrate Thanksgiving all across our country but, perhaps contrary to popular belief, this holiday is not all about football and planning shopping sprees to snag the sales on Black Friday. The origination of the holiday was to celebrate the survival of the Pilgrims who had left England in 1621 and traveled to the New World. They settled in Plymouth, built homes in the wilderness, raised enough crops to keep them alive during the long coming winter, and they were at peace with their Indian neighbors. They had beaten the odds and it was time to celebrate.

Hundreds of years later, especially in this difficult economic climate, we could take some valuable lessons from those brave Pilgrims. They persevered in the face of adversity, planned for difficult times ahead, and made friends with their neighbors. In other words, Thanksgiving is not about gluttony at the dinner table. The average American will consume more than 4,500 calories and 229 grams of fat on Thanksgiving Day alone, according to the Caloric Control Council (who knew there was such a Council?? Please tell me it’s not government funded, please, please??).

This holiday, enjoy your family and friends and the bounty that will grace your table on Thanksgiving but let us all truly give thanks to people who are special to us. Start a new Thanksgiving tradition and take the time to share your thoughts in a handwritten note to someone who has made a difference in your life. Simple, meaningful, thoughtful and fat free! You will brighten someone’s day, I promise you. Now, please pass the pumpkin pie.

Labor Pains

Filed under: Uncategorized — Carol @ 10:12 am
Labor Day has come to be celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer. In high society, Labor Day is (or was) considered the last day of the year when it is fashionable for women to wear white but these days most fashionistas would agree that rule is passe?. One needs only to look to the red carpet in Hollywood to observe far greater fashion faux pas than a pair of white sandals in mid September!
Although my own children are now successful and productive adults, Labor Day, in another perspective, also reminds me of labor pains and the birthing process. Any woman who has given birth knows how painful and difficult labor pains can be but few, if any, would argue the results are nothing short of a miracle. NEWS4Women was born in 2007 in response to a need and interest for women in our community to network and support each other in business and in life. We breathed life into the professional and non-profit communities with events, resources and communications tools. We formed partnerships and alliances, gave back to the community, and had a great time doing it all! Over the last year, due to my return to the corporate world, we weren’t able to offer the same opportunities for women but I am thrilled to announce the rebirth of NEWS4Women. Labor and delivery are being supported by a terrific team of women affectionately known as our Pink Tank who, as a group, are developing new events and rebuilding opportunities to grow local businesses and support non-profit organizations. We invite you to come meet the Pink Tank and learn how you can be part of this dynamic group and how we Network to Encourage Women’s Support for women!
