Pink slip- a piece of lingerie or a trip to the unemployment line?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Carol @ 1:42 pm

Pink slip- what comes to mind? A piece of sexy lingerie or, more likely these days, the dreaded call to report to the boss’s office. Now, more than ever, it’s time to sharpen your professional skills. Those who are at the bottom of the corporate totem pole may need to improve their competency in a variety of areas to make themselves more valuable in today’s workforce. And those who are at the top, and therefore are the most expensive talent, may be sacrificed due to budget constraints. Brush up on technology skills, offer to serve on a committee or project, and network outside of your company to stay engaged in the professional community. As the saying goes, it’s not what you know, but whom you know when seeking new employment so building relationships now may serve you well should you find yourself in need of a job. Like a good scout, be prepared whether you keep your current job or find yourself with the proverbial pink slip.

And, if you find yourself joining the many others who have been downsized in this economy, a good attitude may be as helpful as a stellar resume. Long gone are the days of corporate security and pension plans so, as challenging as this time may be, use the opportunity to reflect on your long term career goals and interests. Have you harbored a desire to start your own business? Maybe you have always wanted to volunteer for a local nonprofit organization but could never find the time? Analyze your skills to determine the best path for you at this juncture and network both online and offline. Use personal relationships to make connections. Be proactive and visible. Social networks are buzzing with activity and can be an effective way to leverage connections. The NEWS4Women social network offers a newly formed group called Pink Slips designed to bring together women from a wide range of backgrounds to encourage and support each other with professional needs and social activities.
